Pendant lights in a restaurant fit out, a ceiling fan on a white ceiling and a finished cafe fit out

How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan? With Faze Electrical & Airconditioning, it’s from $250 for a standard installation of one fan. Your fixed price depends mostly on three things: the wiring at the spot, the ceiling, and the fan and its controls. Every quote is free and fixed in writing, so the price you accept is the price on the invoice.

The quick answer

  • A standard installation of one ceiling fan is from $250.
  • No wiring at the spot, a high or raked ceiling, and the fan’s controls are the three things that most often change the price.
  • If the circuit has no safety switch, adding one to an existing switchboard is from $385.
  • In Queensland a licensed electrician must install the fan. You can buy the fan yourself.

How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan?

From $250 for one fan, for a standard installation. A job that needs more than that is quoted as a fixed price once we know the room, before any work starts.

What a standard installation is

The job closest to our starting price is a fan going where a fan or a light already is, with the wiring, the support and the wall switch in place, on an ordinary flat ceiling. Swapping an old fan for a new one at the same spot is the simplest job of all.

  • A fixed written price before work starts.
  • Installation and testing by a licensed electrician.
  • A certificate of testing and compliance for the electrical work.
  • A 12 month workmanship warranty on electrical work.

The three things that most often change the price

These are the three that most often move a quote above $250.

  1. No wiring at the spotA fan where there’s no light or fan now needs new cable run to the ceiling and to a wall switch. Roof space access and the distance to a lighting circuit set the time.
  2. The ceilingA fan moves and is heavier than a light, so it’s fixed to the ceiling framing, not plasterboard alone. A high ceiling needs an extension rod and a raked one needs a mount made for the slope.
  3. The fan and its controlsSwitching the fan and its light separately from the wall needs an extra wire. A remote means a receiver at the fan. An alfresco fan must be a model rated for outdoor use.

Each of these, plus fan motor types and fitting several fans at once, is covered in our full ceiling fan installation cost guide.

Can you install a ceiling fan yourself in Queensland?

No. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office lists replacing a light fitting with a ceiling fan as electrical work, and says you should always use a licensed electrician for it.

DIY fan wiring is illegal. The Electrical Safety Office says DIY electrical work is unlicensed electrical work, which is illegal, with penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals. It also says an insurer may refuse a claim for a fire caused by illegal electrical work. The source is its page, Don’t do your own electrical work.

Buying the fan yourself is fine. The same page says it’s not illegal to buy accessories that need to be hard wired, but a licensed electrician must connect them. Our electrical contractor licence is 90552.

Common questions about the cost

Does the fan’s circuit need a safety switch?

The Electrical Safety Office says you should consider having safety switches on all circuits. If the circuit for your fan has none, we tell you before any work starts. Adding one to an existing switchboard is from $385.

Can you quote several fans together?

Yes. Tell us every room when you ask, and we’ll give you one fixed price for all of them.

What does a ceiling fan cost to run?

Very little. The energy.gov.au page on heating and cooling says fans cost only around 2 cents per hour to run and can reduce the perceived temperature by about 3°C, but they must blow on you, because they can’t cool a room.

Our advice

Ask for the quote before you buy the fan, and tell us what’s on the ceiling now. If the fan is going where a fan or light already is, on a flat ceiling, expect the price to sit close to the starting price of $250. No wiring at the spot, a high or raked ceiling, or separate light switching will add to it.
