Faze Electrical & Airconditioning handles every part of a switchboard upgrade in Brisbane and Logan – from the small “swap a ceramic fuse for an RCD” job, through to full switchboard replacements, three phase upgrades, and coordination with Energex where the supply is involved. Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 90552. Verifiable on the Electrical Safety Office licence search.
If your home has a fuse-based switchboard older than 20 years, has a switchboard that runs hot to touch, has breakers that nuisance-trip when the kettle and aircon run together, or you are about to add a large new load such as an EV charger – the switchboard upgrade is the job.
Call 07 4428 2766 or text 0489 275 747 for a free fixed-price switchboard quote.
When you need a switchboard upgrade
Common reasons Brisbane homeowners book a switchboard upgrade:
- The fuse board is ceramic – the old porcelain fuse holders are pre-1970s technology and do not meet current Australian Wiring Rules.
- Existing RCD coverage is missing or partial – current standard (AS/NZS 3000:2018) requires RCDs on every circuit including lighting.
- Breakers nuisance trip – when you turn on the iron AND the toaster AND the kettle, a breaker trips. Usually means the circuit is overloaded or the breaker rating is wrong.
- You are adding load – new air conditioning, EV charger, induction cooktop, pool pump. The existing main switch may not have headroom.
- The board has heat damage – browning around terminals, melted plastic, scorch marks. Stop using it. Ring us today.
- You are upgrading to three phase – needed for larger EV chargers, large air conditioning loads, workshops, granny flats with their own meter.
Old fuse box and ceramic fuse replacement
Many older homes still have a fuse box with ceramic fuse holders and fuse wire. A fuse protects the cable from overload, but it does not protect a person from electric shock the way a safety switch does. We replace a single fuse with a circuit breaker from $250, add a safety switch from $385, or replace the whole fuse box with a new switchboard from $1,850. Which option suits depends on the condition of the board and the wiring behind it, and we confirm it with a fixed price quote before work starts. A certificate of testing and compliance is provided when the work is finished.

- Removal of old switchboard, fuses or legacy breakers.
- New IP-rated weather-tight enclosure where outdoor.
- New main switch, RCDs on every circuit (Type A or Type B as required), correctly rated MCBs per circuit.

- Insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD trip tests on every circuit.
- Coordination with Energex where the meter or the supply is involved.
- Certificate of testing and compliance, provided to you when the work is finished.
- 12 month workmanship warranty.

- Add a single RCD to existing board: from $385
- Replace existing breaker with RCD/RCBO: from $245 per pole
- Full single-phase residential switchboard upgrade: from $1,850 (most $2,500-$3,800)
- Three phase upgrade (homes): from $4,800 (varies with Energex paperwork)
- Three phase upgrade (commercial): from $5,500
- Surge protection device on main: from $385 supplied and installed
- Thermal imaging inspection: from $185
- Energex coordination – we coordinate directly with Energex.

- Logan Central, Kingston, Springwood, Underwood, Daisy Hill
- Browns Plains, Beenleigh, Loganlea, Goodna, Ipswich
- Springfield, Springfield Lakes, Sunnybank
A typical residential switchboard upgrade takes 4-7 hours including testing. We coordinate the Energex outage if needed.
We coordinate directly with Energex on connection paperwork. That means one company books the Energex outage, does the switchboard, does the meter reconnection – no juggling three trades.
Surge protection
A surge protection device is fitted at the switchboard and limits voltage spikes that arrive on the power lines, most often during storms. It helps protect electronics such as air conditioner circuit boards, televisions, computers and appliances with electronic controls. It does not replace safety switches, which protect people from electric shock. Surge protection is usually fitted during a switchboard upgrade, when there is room on the new board, and it can be added to a suitable existing board. We quote surge protection with the switchboard work, as a fixed price, after checking the board.
Switchboard thermal imaging
We pair switchboard upgrades with thermal imaging where appropriate. A thermal camera spots hot terminals (loose connections, undersized cable, ageing breakers) before they fail.
We recommend annual thermal imaging for all commercial sites – it is a 30-minute inspection that catches the kind of fault that starts an electrical fire. For homes it is worth doing every 3-5 years on older switchboards. Costs from $185 per board.
