A new switchboard, two electricians running cable at a shop counter and a thermal camera at a switchboard

Three phase power installation cost is quoted per site, because it depends on what’s already in your street, at your meter and in your switchboard. We don’t publish a set price for it. We inspect the property and give you a fixed price in writing for the electrical work. The network side is arranged with Energex, and any Energex charges sit outside our price.

The quick answer

  • Faze quotes three phase per site, free and fixed in writing, after an inspection.
  • The price moves with the supply in your street, the cable run to the switchboard and whether the board is replaced.
  • We lodge the Electrical Work Request with Energex. Your retailer raises the service order, and Energex does the network work.
  • Not every home needs it. A single phase EV charger installation is from $1,650 when you supply the charger.

How much does three phase power installation cost?

It’s quoted for each property. Two houses in the same street can need very different work, depending on how the power reaches each one and what’s in the switchboard. These are the things that change the price.

What changes a three phase quote, checked 5 October 2026
Factor Why it matters
The street supply Whether three phase is already available at your connection point, or the network needs more work first.
The cable run The new cable from the connection point to your meter and switchboard, overhead or underground, and how long it is.
The switchboard A single phase board often has to be replaced with a three phase board to take the new supply.
New circuits The circuit from the board to the charger or machine, and how far away it is.
Energex charges Any charges for the network work are separate from our price.
Orange conduit laid in a trench for an underground cable
Where the supply comes in underground, the new cable runs through conduit in a trench.

Does your home actually need three phase?

Most homes run on single phase power, and most don’t need more. Three phase is worth looking at when you want to run equipment like this.

  • An 11 kW or 22 kW EV charger.
  • Two EVs charging at home.
  • Workshop machinery built for a three phase supply.

Check the car before you upgrade for a fast charger. A car can only take power as fast as its own onboard charger allows, so a 22 kW wall charger won’t charge a car any faster than the car is built for.

For one car charging overnight, a single phase charger is often enough. Our EV charger installation Brisbane page covers that job, and our guide to EV charger installation cost explains the from $1,650 price for a single phase charger you supply.

Who does what: your electrician, Energex and your retailer

A three phase upgrade has work on both sides of your meter. Here’s who does each part.

Who What they do
Your electrician (Faze) Inspects the site, quotes, lodges the Electrical Work Request with Energex, replaces the switchboard and cable on your side, tests the work and gives you a certificate of testing and compliance.
Your electricity retailer Is told about the change and raises a service order with Energex.
Energex Does the work on its network side, including the supply upgrade to more phases.

Energex’s Electrical Work Request form lists a “supply upgrade (incl. install additional phases)” as one of the requests an electrical contractor lodges. The same form says that in most situations Energex starts work only once it has a service order from the customer’s retailer.

Common questions about three phase power

Could a switchboard upgrade solve the problem instead?

Sometimes. If the board is old or full, the fix may be the board rather than the supply. A full single phase switchboard upgrade is from $1,850, and our page on switchboard upgrade Brisbane explains the job. Our Australian switchboard upgrade cost guide covers the prices.

Do you install three phase for businesses?

Yes. Shops and workshops are handled by our commercial electrician Brisbane team, and the same Energex request applies.

Can I do any of the wiring myself?

No. In Queensland, electrical work has to be done by a licensed electrician. The Electrical Safety Office says to never do your own electrical work.

Our advice

Start with what you want to run. If it’s one EV charging overnight, a single phase charger may do the job. If you need three phase, get a site assessment first, because the street supply and the switchboard decide the price.
