The deep clean is the service

Plenty of Brisbane operators sell a cheap aircon service that amounts to rinsing the filters and wiping the louvres. That does almost nothing for the two parts that actually get dirty: the indoor coil and the barrel fan hidden behind it. Our service opens the unit up and cleans it properly:

• Filters removed, washed and refitted
• Chassis opened and electrical components protected
• Indoor coil treated with a coil cleaner and rinsed through
• Barrel fan cleaned, where the worst of the mould lives
• Condensate drain flushed so it cannot back up and drip inside
• Unit sanitised, reassembled and run tested
• Air on and air off temperatures and running current measured and recorded
• Outdoor unit inspected and cleared of leaves and debris

Ducted systems: service and clean only

We service and clean ducted air conditioning for $599.50 including GST, covering the filters, the return air, the indoor coil, a condensate drain flush and a check of the zones. We do not install or repair ducted systems. If your ducted unit is on the way out, our honest advice is usually to replace it with two to four split systems: each room runs independently, running costs are lower, and one failed unit no longer takes out the whole house. Regas rules: why we will not just add gas

A split system does not consume refrigerant. It is a sealed circuit, like a fridge, so if the gas is low it has leaked, and pumping more in without finding the leak wastes your money and puts refrigerant into the atmosphere. We only regas after a leak check: $709.50 for 2 to 3.5 kW units or $854.50 for 5 to 8 kW units, including GST. If a technician offers you a regas without a leak check, get a second opinion. How often should you service your air conditioner?

Every 12 months in Brisbane, ideally in late winter or spring before the unit goes back into heavy rotation. Homes with pets, smokers, dusty renovations or units that run most days benefit from a shorter interval. The unit will tell you when it is overdue: a musty smell when it starts up, weaker airflow than you remember, water dripping from the indoor unit, or a power bill creeping up while the cooling gets worse.
