Queensland legislation has progressively tightened smoke alarm requirements. By 1 January 2027 every home in Queensland – regardless of age – must have interconnected, photoelectric, hardwired or 10-year-sealed smoke alarms in every bedroom, every hallway outside a bedroom, and on every storey. New builds and major renovations have been under this rule since 1 January 2022.

What Queensland legislation requires
The current Queensland legislation under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990 (sec 104RB) requires:
- Smoke alarms must be photoelectric (not ionisation – those are being phased out).
- Alarms must be interconnected – when one detects smoke, all of them sound.
- Alarms must be hardwired with battery backup OR powered by a 10-year non-removable lithium battery.
- Required in every bedroom, in every hallway connecting bedrooms, on every storey.

For owner-occupiers the compliance deadline is 1 January 2027. For sales and new leases the obligation is now (since 1 January 2022 for new builds and major renos; for property sales the obligation rolled in for properties sold or newly leased after the 2022 date).
Hardwired vs 10-year sealed – which to choose
Hardwired interconnected smoke alarms (our most common install):
- Connected to mains power with 9V battery backup
- Interconnected via dedicated wire or wireless RF
- Lifespan ~10 years per alarm
- Pricier upfront, cheaper over 20 years
- Best for owner-occupiers and new builds
10-year sealed RF-interconnected:
- Self-contained 10-year lithium battery (sealed – no replacement)
- Interconnected wirelessly
- No electrical work needed (no holes through ceiling cavity)
- Higher upfront cost per unit but lower install cost
- Best for retrofit on slab-on-ground homes with no roof space, rentals where minimising mess matters
Hybrid – hardwired where existing wiring exists, RF for new bedrooms where running cable is hard. Common for older Queenslanders with limited ceiling access.

For a 3-bedroom single-storey home compliant with the 2027 rules:
