Electric vehicles made up more than one in ten new car sales in Queensland by 2026, and staff, tenants, fleet drivers and customers now expect somewhere to plug in. Workplace charging is the second most used charging location after home, because a car parked for eight hours can fully recharge on an ordinary 7 kW AC charger.

Commercial pricing is driven by four things: the number and speed of chargers, the distance from the switchboard to the car parks, whether the existing supply has spare capacity, and whether you need networked billing. These are typical market ranges to help you budget. Cable runs across a car park are usually the item that moves the price most, at roughly $30 to $50 per metre for cable and conduit, more where core drilling or trenching is needed. Workplace EV charging for staff and fleets
For most workplaces the right answer is AC charging at 7 kW or 11 kW per bay, not DC fast charging. Staff cars sit for a full shift, so slower and cheaper chargers deliver the same result at a fraction of the cost and with far less demand on the supply. Fleet depots are similar: vans and utes that return by 5 pm are full by morning on 7 kW. We typically recommend:
- Wall-mounted or bollard-mounted 7 kW to 22 kW chargers with tethered cables for fleets, or socketed units for mixed use.
- RFID or app access so only authorised drivers can charge, with usage reports for fringe benefits and fleet cost tracking.
- Dynamic load management from the first charger, so the site can grow without a supply upgrade later.
Every installation is notified to Energex as required for chargers above the connection standard thresholds, tested and certified with a Certificate of Test, and handed over with a wiring diagram and the load management settings documented. EV charging for body corporates and apartment buildings
Body corporate EV charging is the fastest growing part of our commercial work, and it is also the most political. In Queensland, a charger that connects to common property infrastructure is an improvement under the Body Corporate and Community Management Act 1997. The committee can approve an owner’s improvement where the total cost is under $3,000 and it does not affect the appearance of the building; anything larger, or any shared charging scheme, goes to a general meeting by ordinary resolution. Unlike New South Wales there is no deemed approval and no right-to-charge law, so a proposal that answers the committee’s questions up front is what gets a yes.

It covers a capacity assessment of the building’s main switchboard and supply, a load management design that guarantees the building’s own loads are never at risk, metering and billing so each owner pays for their own energy through an OCPP platform, a by-law-ready allocation of bays, and staged pricing from a single owner charger through to a whole car park.
Load management and three-phase supply
The question every commercial client asks is whether the building can handle the extra load. Usually yes, with load management. A dynamic load management system meters the site’s incoming supply in real time and shares whatever capacity is spare across the connected chargers. It means a supply that would support two unmanaged 22 kW chargers can run eight managed ones, and the main switch never trips.
Three-phase is the second lever. Almost all commercial buildings already have it, but tenancies, sheds and older shopfronts sometimes only have a single phase brought to the tenancy board. For 11 kW and 22 kW chargers, or for more than two or three chargers on one site, we bring three-phase to the charger location, either from the building’s main board or via an Energex supply upgrade. Grants and incentives (checked September 2026)
There is currently no Queensland Government rebate for workplace or commercial EV chargers; the state’s EV rebate scheme, which covered vehicle purchases only, closed in September 2024. At federal level, ARENA runs periodic co-funding rounds for public, destination and fleet charging under its Driving the Nation program, which suit larger multi-charger projects and are competitive. Chargers and installation are depreciable business assets, so ask your accountant about the treatment available in the financial year you install.
