A safety switch, also called an RCD (residual current device), monitors the current flowing out on the active conductor and back on the neutral. If the two differ by more than 30 milliamps, some of that current is leaking to earth, possibly through a person, and the switch cuts the power in under 300 milliseconds. That is fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock in most cases. It also stops the kind of fault that starts a fire inside a wall.
Houses in Woodridge, Kingston, Slacks Creek, Daisy Hill and Shailer Park built between the 1960s and the early 1990s often have either no safety switch at all or a single safety switch on the power points only, fitted when the home was sold or rented. Lights, the oven, the hot water system, the air conditioner and the pool pump are unprotected. We see this several times a week. What are the safety switch requirements in Queensland?
The rules come from the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld) and the Wiring Rules, AS/NZS 3000. In plain terms, as at September 2026:

The power point rule for rentals and sales has been in place since 2002 and the Electrical Safety Office actively enforces it, particularly through property managers and conveyancers. It is a minimum, not a recommendation. The Electrical Safety Office’s own advice is that every circuit in the home should be protected, and that is what we install by default.
Do the rules change in 2027?
People often ask us about a 2027 deadline for safety switches. There is no such deadline. The 1 January 2027 date is the Queensland smoke alarm deadline, when every owner-occupied home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. Rentals and homes being sold have needed those alarms since 2022. The safety switch rules above are already in force and did not change with the 2025 amendments to the Electrical Safety Regulation, which dealt with roof space work and work near energised equipment. Safety switch or circuit breaker: which do you have?
Look at your switchboard. Circuit breakers are the narrow switches labelled by amperage (10 A, 16 A, 20 A). A safety switch is usually wider, marked with 30 mA, and has a T or Test button. An RCBO is the width of a breaker but has the test button as well. If you see fuses with ceramic holders, you have neither and the board needs replacing. Press the T or Test button on each safety switch every three months. The switch should trip immediately and the power on that circuit should go off. Reset it afterwards.
