A heat pump hot water system works like a reverse-cycle air conditioner in heating mode. A small compressor pulls heat from the outside air and transfers it into the water in the tank. For every kilowatt of electricity it uses it delivers three to four kilowatts of heat, which is why it runs on a fraction of the power of the element in an old electric tank. In Brisbane and Logan, where the overnight temperature rarely drops below 8 degrees, a heat pump runs efficiently all year and the backup element in most units almost never switches on.

Most of our heat pump work is replacing a failed 250 L or 315 L electric tank in homes across Logan, Brisbane southside and Ipswich, or converting from gas storage in older brick homes. Both jobs need an electrician, and that is where the plumber-only installers fall down. The federal STC discount is usually already deducted in the prices installers advertise. Always ask whether a quote is before or after STCs and whether it includes removal of the old tank, the tempering valve and the electrical work.

Heat pump hot water rebates in Queensland (checked September 2026)

• Federal STCs. Heat pumps that meet the Clean Energy Regulator’s efficiency requirements earn Small-scale Technology Certificates. In south east Queensland’s climate zone this is typically worth $700 to $1,200 off a 270 L to 315 L unit, deducted from your invoice by the installer, who then claims the certificates. The number of certificates drops every 1 January as the scheme winds down to 2030, so the discount shrinks each year.
• Queensland state rebates. There is no Queensland Government rebate for heat pump hot water in 2026. The Queensland Solar Hot Water Rebate closed in 2012 and the Battery Booster program closed in 2024.

Electrical requirements for a heat pump hot water system

Under AS/NZS 3000 the manufacturer’s installation instructions must be followed, and nearly every heat pump sold in Australia specifies:

• A dedicated circuit, usually 10 A, 15 A or 20 A depending on the model. A Reclaim CO2 unit, for example, calls for its own 15 A circuit. Units with a backup element can draw more.
• A weatherproof isolating switch within sight of and reach of the unit, so it can be safely disconnected for service.

• A hard-wired connection for permanent use. Some units ship with a plug for temporary use only.
• Tariff decisions. Many Brisbane homes have hot water on a controlled load tariff. A heat pump can stay on it, but on a solar home it is usually cheaper to move it to the general tariff and run it on a timer between about 10 am and 3 pm so it heats on your own solar.
