Buying a split system without a rebate? Text us your suburb and the room. Our automated quote assistant replies straight away, at any hour.

There’s no aircon rebate in QLD in 2026: the Queensland Government has no rebate for buying or installing a split system air conditioner, and the Climate Smart Energy Savers rebate has closed. Energex’s PeakSmart program is closed to new participants too. For heat pump hot water, the federal STC discount still applies, and it comes off the price on your quote.
The quick answer
- No Queensland Government rebate is open for a household air conditioner as of 5 October 2026.
- Climate Smart Energy Savers has closed. The Queensland Government described it as closed in April 2024.
- A heat pump hot water system can earn federal small scale technology certificates (STCs). An air conditioner can’t.
- Two Queensland bill concessions are open to eligible card holders: the Electricity Rebate and the Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession.
Is there an air conditioner rebate in Queensland in 2026?
No. We checked every scheme below against its official source on 5 October 2026. The Queensland Government’s home energy savings page lists no appliance or air conditioner rebate.
| Scheme | Status | Covers air conditioners? |
|---|---|---|
| Climate Smart Energy Savers (Queensland) | Closed | It did; no longer |
| PeakSmart program (Energex) | Closed to new participants | It did; no longer |
| Small scale technology certificates (federal) | Open, shrinking each year to 2030 | No. Heat pump and solar water heaters only |
| Household Energy Upgrades Fund (federal loans) | Open | Yes, as a discounted loan, not a rebate |
| Electricity Rebate (Queensland) | Open | No. A bill rebate for card holders |
| Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession (Queensland) | Open | No. A bill concession |
Some sites still show old rebate wording. Check any Queensland appliance rebate against qld.gov.au before you rely on it.
The Climate Smart Energy Savers rebate has closed
The scheme’s rules are in the Queensland Government regulation. It paid one rebate per applicant for an eligible appliance of at least 4 stars, or a heat pump or solar hot water system.
| Appliance | Taxable income $66,667 or less | Other applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Air conditioner | $650 | $400 |
| Hot water system | $1,000 | $800 |
In a ministerial statement on 14 April 2024, the Queensland Government called the program “now-closed” and said more than 72,700 households received cash back. No replacement appliance rebate is listed on qld.gov.au today.
Energex PeakSmart is closed to new participants
Energex’s PeakSmart air conditioning page says the program is now closed to new participants, and that the technology keeps working where it’s needed to manage high demand on the network.
What that means for you
- A PeakSmart signal receiver in your air conditioner lets the network cap its power use during high demand.
- If you already have a PeakSmart enabled system, it stays active.
- A new system that’s “PeakSmart ready” no longer brings any payment, so don’t pay extra for it.
What rebate is there for heat pump hot water?
The federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The Clean Energy Regulator’s page on solar water heaters and air source heat pumps says these are the two kinds of water heater that earn STCs. If you assign the STCs to a registered agent, you get a discount on the price of the system.
- The exact model must be on the Clean Energy Regulator’s register.
- An air source heat pump must be under 425 litres.
- The install must meet the state’s licensing rules. In Queensland that’s a licensed plumber for the water and a licensed electrician for the wiring.
The number of STCs depends on the model, your postcode zone and the year it’s installed. The Clean Energy Regulator’s entitlement page sets the deeming period at 5 years for a 2026 install and 4 years for 2027, falling to 1 year in 2030 when the scheme ends. Fewer years means fewer certificates.
Certificate prices aren’t fixed on the open market. The Clean Energy Regulator says the STC clearing house price is $40 per certificate, excluding GST. Ask for the discount as its own line on the quote.

How STCs are claimed on a heat pump install
Most people use a registered agent, usually through the supplier, so they don’t have to create the certificates themselves.
- Choose a registered modelConfirm the exact model is on the register before you buy.
- Get the discount in writingYour quote should show the STC discount, which you get in return for assigning the STCs.
- Read before you signThe Clean Energy Regulator says to review and understand any paperwork you’re asked to sign on the day.
If you create the STCs yourself instead, the Clean Energy Regulator says it must be within 12 months of installation. If you have rooftop solar, it also suggests a timer so the heat pump runs during the day.

Other help still open to Queensland households
| Scheme | What it gives | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity Rebate (Queensland Government) | $399.47 a year, including GST | Holders of a Queensland Seniors Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Veteran Gold Card, and some asylum seekers. Apply through your retailer. |
| Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession (Queensland Government) | $522.09 a year, including GST, from 1 July 2026 | Pensioner Concession or Health Care Card holders with a qualifying medical condition and air conditioning or heating at home |
| Household Energy Upgrades Fund (CEFC) | Discounted loans through partner lenders | Homeowners. Eligible technology may include air conditioners, ceiling fans and heat pumps |
Two schemes cover solar and batteries, which we don’t work on. The Queensland Government’s Supercharged Solar for Renters gives eligible landlords rebates of up to $3,500 for solar on rental properties. Federal STCs on solar batteries are set at around a 30% discount, according to the Clean Energy Regulator.

For heat pump hot water, we do the electrical side: the dedicated circuit, the isolator and RCD protection, and we work with your plumber. The STC discount comes from the registered agent supplying the unit. We don’t publish a heat pump price, so we quote each job. Our heat pump hot water installation page has the details.
Common questions about Queensland rebates
Is there a $1,000 air conditioner rebate in Queensland?
No. Under the Queensland Government regulation, $1,000 was the top Climate Smart Energy Savers amount for a hot water system. The air conditioner amount was $400 or $650, and the scheme has closed.
Can a renter get help with air conditioning costs?
Not for the air conditioner itself. A tenant with a qualifying medical condition and an eligible concession card can apply for the Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession, provided they pay the power bill.
Where do I check for a new rebate?
The Queensland Government’s home energy savings page on qld.gov.au. The Queensland Government warns about third party websites and says to use pages with qld.gov.au in the address. Our energy saving tips for home cover savings that don’t need a rebate.
Our advice
Don’t wait for an air conditioner rebate: none is open, and none has been announced on qld.gov.au. If you’re getting heat pump hot water, ask for the STC discount as a line on the quote, and install in 2026 if you can, while the deeming period is 5 years.
