A Daikin outdoor unit beside a brick home, an indoor unit being serviced and two outdoor units on a wall

To get a split system ready for a Brisbane summer, use this aircon checklist: do four checks yourself, then book a professional service and clean if the last one was more than 12 months ago. With Faze Electrical & Airconditioning, that service costs $341 including GST for one split system and $577.50 for two. October is the month to do it, before the first heatwave and the summer rush.

The quick answer

  • The four checks take about 20 minutes: wash the filters, check the remote, clear around the outdoor unit and run the system for 15 minutes.
  • Book a service and clean if it’s been more than 12 months, or if the system smells musty, blows weakly or drips water indoors.
  • A service and clean is $341 including GST for one split system, $577.50 for two, $814 for three and $1,050.50 for four.
  • Leave the coil, the fan, the drain and the refrigerant to a licensed technician.

What can you check yourself before summer?

You can do four checks without tools and without opening the unit. Together they take about 20 minutes, and they tell you whether the system needs a technician before the hot weather arrives.

Four checks to do before summer
Check What to do
1. Wash the filters Lift the front panel of the indoor unit, slide the filters out and clean them the way the owner manual describes. Let them dry fully before they go back in.
2. Check the remote Fit fresh batteries, set the mode to cool and set the temperature a few degrees below the room temperature.
3. Clear around the outdoor unit Move leaves, garden waste, bins and stored items away from it so air can flow through. Leave the covers on.
4. Run the system for 15 minutes Notice the smell, the airflow, any noise, and whether water drips from the indoor unit.

The filters sit behind the front panel of the indoor unit. Lift the panel and slide them out.

Stop there. The coil, the fan and the drain sit behind the chassis beside live electrical parts, and the refrigerant circuit is sealed. Both are jobs for a licensed technician.

Signs a split system needs a service

A split system needs a service when it smells musty, blows weakly, drips water indoors, or has gone more than 12 months without one. Each sign points to a part that a filter wash can’t reach.

Common signs, the likely cause and what fixes it
What you notice Likely cause What fixes it
Musty smell when the unit starts Mould on the indoor coil and the barrel fan Service and clean
Weak airflow with clean filters Dirt built up on the coil and fan Service and clean
Water dripping from the indoor unit Blocked condensate drain Service and clean, which includes a drain flush
Runs but doesn’t get cold Dirty coil, a failed part, or a refrigerant leak Service first, then a leak check if the gas is low

Brisbane humidity is the reason mould is so common here. The inside of a split system stays damp after every cooling cycle, so mould grows on the coil and the fan. Then the unit blows that air into the room.

Our air conditioner cleaning in Brisbane page explains why split systems grow mould here.

What a Faze service and clean includes

Every Faze service is a full clean of the indoor unit, with the chassis opened so the coil and the fan can be reached. There are eight steps, and on each split system our technician:

  1. Removes the filters, washes them and refits them.
  2. Opens the chassis and protects the electrical components.
  3. Treats the indoor coil with a coil cleaner and rinses it through.
  4. Cleans the barrel fan, which is where the worst of the mould lives.
  5. Flushes the condensate drain so it can’t back up and drip inside.
  6. Sanitises the unit, reassembles it and run tests it.
  7. Measures and records the air on and air off temperatures and the running current.
  8. Inspects the outdoor unit and clears it of leaves and debris.

Every Faze service opens up the indoor unit, so the coil and the fan can be reached and cleaned.

Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for each indoor unit. Full details are on the air conditioning service in Brisbane page.

Jobs that need a licensed technician

Any work on the refrigerant or the electrical parts of an air conditioner needs a licensed technician. In Australia a person who handles refrigerant must hold a licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council, and in Queensland electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.

A split system doesn’t use up refrigerant. The refrigerant runs in a sealed circuit, so low gas means there’s a leak.

Our view: we only regas a system after a leak check. Adding gas to a leaking system wastes your money and releases refrigerant into the air.

We hold both licences: Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 90552 and ARCtick L181564. So the same team can clean the unit, find a leak and fix an electrical fault on the one visit.

When it’s better to replace the unit

Replacing the unit makes more sense than a service when the indoor coil has corroded, or a major part has failed on an older unit. If our technician opens the unit and finds that, we tell you before you spend money on a clean.

from $1,814.51new 2.5 kW split system, supplied and installed

Both prices include GST. The new system price is for a 2.5 kW split system, supplied and installed back to back on a single storey home.

Our air conditioner sizing guide shows which size suits each room, and the air conditioner installation cost guide lists every extra.

How often should a split system be serviced in Brisbane?

We recommend a service every 12 months for a split system in Brisbane, in late winter or spring. Some homes and units do better with a shorter gap:

  • Homes with pets.
  • Homes with smokers.
  • Homes with recent renovations.
  • Units that run most days.

Landlords and property managers get a written report by email after every visit, which gives the property a maintenance record.

The short version: your pre summer aircon checklist

Five things to tick off

  • Wash the filters and let them dry.
  • Put fresh batteries in the remote and set it to cool.
  • Clear the space around the outdoor unit.
  • Run the system for 15 minutes and note any smell, drip, noise or weak airflow.
  • Book a service and clean if it’s been more than 12 months, or if you noticed any of those signs.

Common questions about getting an aircon ready for summer

Does Faze service ducted air conditioning?

Yes. A ducted service and coil clean costs $599.50 including GST. It covers the filters, the return air, the indoor coil, a condensate drain flush and a check of the zones. We service and clean ducted systems only.

Will a service help with a warranty claim?

A service history helps if you ever need to make a warranty claim on a part such as a compressor or a fan motor. Manufacturers expect the unit to be maintained in line with its manual.

What if the unit still doesn’t cool after a service?

The next step is a leak check. Our air conditioner not cooling guide explains the common causes and what each one costs to fix.

Our advice

Do the four checks in October, before the first heatwave. If the last service was more than 12 months ago, or you noticed a musty smell, weak airflow or a drip, book a service and clean. Get every unit done on the one visit, because the cost for each unit drops.
