The Faze team with two vans, two electricians carrying cable and conduit run along a warehouse wall

A smart home installation is the wiring and setup that lets you run your lights, switches, doorbell and air conditioner from an app or by voice. In Queensland, every part that’s fixed wiring has to be done by a licensed electrician. The apps, speakers and plug-in devices are yours. Here’s what the electrician does, step by step, and what you get at the end.

The quick answer

  • The job has three parts: a plan and fixed quote, the wiring, then setup and handover.
  • A smart switch retrofit with Faze starts from $145.
  • Building or renovating? Pre-wire before the plaster goes up.
  • You get a certificate of testing and compliance and a 12 month workmanship warranty on our work.

What does a smart home installation involve?

Most installations run in three stages. The first one is free.

  1. Plan and quoteWe look at what you want controlled, the wiring at each switch and the switchboard, then give you a fixed price in writing.
  2. WiringWe fit the smart switches and dimmers, run power to hubs and doorbells, and add any new circuits or cable.
  3. Setup and handoverWe test the work, connect the devices to your app, and hand over the certificate.

The electrician’s part and your part

Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office lists replacing a light switch and installing a power point as electrical work. It also says you can buy accessories that need to be hard-wired, but a licensed electrician must connect them.

Who does each part of a smart home installation
Part of the job Who does it
Smart switches and dimmers on the wall A licensed electrician
New power points for hubs, screens and speakers A licensed electrician
A transformer for a wired doorbell A licensed electrician
Apps, accounts and routines You, or we set them up with you
Smart plugs, smart bulbs in lamps, speakers You

Don’t open the switch plate. The Electrical Safety Office says DIY electrical work is unlicensed electrical work, which is illegal, and that your insurer may refuse a fire claim caused by it.

Building or renovating? Pre-wire first

The cheap time to add smart home wiring is before the plaster goes up. At that stage we can add the cable for things you may want later, without cutting into finished walls.

  • A neutral wire at every switch box, because smart switches usually need one.
  • Cat 6 data cable to each TV spot and to the front door for a video doorbell.
  • Conduit to where the outdoor lights will go.
  • Ceiling spots for Wi-Fi access points.

Our data cabling guide covers the network side. The pre-wire consultation for a new build is free at the quote stage.

Older homes: check the switchboard first

Smart devices add little load, but the work still connects to your switchboard. An old board with fuses, or no safety switches, is worth fixing before you add anything new.

Every smart switch and hub is fed from a circuit on the switchboard.

A residential safety audit starts from $295, and a full single-phase switchboard upgrade starts from $1,850. See our electrical safety inspection page and our switchboard upgrade in Brisbane page for what each covers.

What you get when we finish

  • A certificate of testing and compliance for the electrical work.
  • A 12 month workmanship warranty on our work. The devices carry their maker’s warranty.
  • The fixed price we quoted, in writing, before we started.
  • Work done under Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 90552.

Our smart home electrician in Brisbane page lists the devices and systems we install, and our residential electrician Brisbane service covers the rest of the house.

Common questions about smart home installation

Can you install devices I’ve already bought?

Yes, if they’re made for Australian wiring. Send us the make and model when you ask for the quote, so we can check it first.

Will you connect the devices to Google Home or Alexa?

Yes. Google Home and Alexa integration is part of the smart home work we do, and we can set up the app with you at handover.

Can I start small and add devices later?

Yes. You can start with a smart switch or two, from $145 each, and add more as you go. Cable pre-wired during a build makes those later additions easier.

Our advice

Choose your system first, then book one licensed electrician for every part that’s wired in. If you’re building or renovating, get the pre-wire done before the plaster goes up; in an older home, have the switchboard checked first.
